New European Driving Cycle (NEDC)

What is the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC)?

The New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) is a laboratory-based test designed to assess the emission levels of car engines and fuel economy of car models on sale. All the figures quoted by car manufacturers in their publicity materials were the result of NEDC tests.

The test results were supposed to represent the typical usage of a car in Europe, but were constantly criticised for being unachievable in reality. It was replaced in 2018 by a new test called the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) which is more based on real-world situations.
